Netherlands experts call for research investment to ensure digital autonomy

A new report by the ICT Research Platform Netherlands (IPN) emphasizes that achieving digital autonomy requires structural investment in computer science research, education, and talent. While political discussions regarding digital sovereignty often focus on legislation and procurement, the IPN argues that true autonomy begins with the fundamental knowledge required to understand, assess, and develop technology independently.

Experts note that current investments in computer science do not match the strategic importance of digital technology. There is a significant concern regarding dependency on foreign technology and large international tech companies, particularly in software and cloud services. Experts have called for more substantive involvement of technical specialists in policy-making processes in The Hague and Brussels to ensure that major technological decisions are informed by deep expertise.
