Netherlands explores local wind turbine projects to ease grid congestion and develop energy hubs

In the province of Overijssel, the municipality of Staphorst, the provincial government and the energy cooperative Wij Duurzaam Staphorst have launched a study on two new wind turbines. The research examines whether electricity generated by the turbines can be supplied directly to new residential districts and industrial areas, thereby reducing pressure on the national grid and speeding up local development. The plan aligns with a regional target of delivering roughly 40 GWh of additional wind power by 2030 and would locate the turbines between the A28 highway, the railway line and the N377 road.

Separately, the public development organisation POB REKS, created under the Regional Energy and Climate Strategy for the Brabant region, is assessing the feasibility of an energy hub in the Spinder‑Vossenberg area of Tilburg. The study looks at installing new wind turbines and potentially replacing existing ones, with a focus on environmental and health impacts. Draft reports are open for public comment from 1 June to 13 July 2026, and two public meetings are scheduled in June. The municipal council will decide on any installations based on the study’s findings.
