Netherlands faces drought as Rhine and IJssel water levels drop
Persistent drought and low water levels in the Rhine and IJssel rivers are impacting the Netherlands. In the Twente region, precipitation deficits have reached between 225 mm and 263 mm. While recent rainfall may cause a slight rise in groundwater, experts expect levels to decline again, noting that significant and prolonged precipitation is required for a full recovery.
The low water levels present logistical challenges for businesses dependent on river shipping. Companies like Dekkers Groep have implemented adaptation strategies, such as maintaining large gravel depots to mitigate supply disruptions when river transport is halted. Due to the low water in the Upper Rhine, shipments from France and Germany have been interrupted, forcing businesses to rely on stockpiles and more frequent, smaller shipments.
