Netherlands faces grid congestion as energy transition accelerates
The Netherlands is facing significant energy transition challenges as electricity demand outpaces grid capacity. The country currently possesses one of the most congested transmission and distribution systems in the European Union, driven by the rapid adoption of electric vehicles, heat pumps, data centers, and the electrification of industrial processes.
In the Port of Rotterdam, persistent grid congestion has forced companies to delay expansion and sustainability investment plans. To address this, TenneT and Stedin have announced plans to accelerate capacity in Europoort through the installation of a temporary 500 MW transformer. If permits and cable connections are secured, the transformer could be commissioned as early as late 2028.
While this provides a temporary reprieve, a permanent structural solution is not expected until after 2032. Authorities and industry groups emphasize that interim measures, such as smarter grid utilization and increased flexibility in electricity consumption, remain critical to managing the transition.
