Netherlands farmers protest new nitrogen reduction plan

The Dutch cabinet has unveiled new measures aimed at reducing nitrogen emissions, establishing special zones around vulnerable nature areas such as the Nieuwkoopse Plassen, De Haeck and the Reeuwijkse Plassen. These zones will impose additional rules on agricultural businesses, including those in the municipality of Bodegraven‑Reeuwijk, though exact boundaries will be defined later with the province.

Across the country, farmers staged demonstrations, blocking access to 32 sites. About forty farmers closed the entrances to locations including a distribution centre in Beilen, a waste‑processing facility in Wijster, and supermarket distribution points such as one in Geldermalsen. The actions were described as spontaneous, with the Farmers Defence Force (FDF) confirming they were not directly organised by the group but indicating plans for further protests. Earlier this month, a tractor convoy travelled to The Hague while the parliament debated nitrogen policy.
