Netherlands funeral services face pricing and grave clearance scrutiny

Funeral service providers in the Netherlands are facing scrutiny regarding pricing transparency and the management of burial sites. Industry professionals are calling for more openness regarding the costs of preparing a deceased person for burial, noting that prices can vary significantly—ranging from 65 to 150 euros per day—depending on the facilities, location, and level of service provided.

In Gouda, the funeral organization DELA has suspended a planned clearance of 124 children's graves at the IJsselhof cemetery following backlash from grieving parents. The organization had initially proposed clearing the graves in November 2026, offering options such as free clearance, cremation for 2,500 euros, or reburial for 7,000 euros. Parents expressed shock at the decision, citing previous assurances from former owners that the graves would remain undisturbed. DELA has committed to maintaining the graves in their current form for the next two years while investigating past agreements and engaging in dialogue with the bereaved.
