Netherlands government announces budget plans for housing and fuel relief

The Dutch government has presented its budget plans, addressing key issues such as purchasing power, fuel costs, and the housing shortage. According to the CPB, household purchasing power is expected to see a slight decline of 0.1 percent in 2027, though government measures aim to mitigate this by 0.2 percent.

To assist motorists, the cabinet has allocated 1.4 billion euros for tax relief on gasoline and diesel through excise duty discounts. This measure is intended to prevent rising costs at the pump.

In response to the ongoing student housing crisis, where a shortage of approximately 20,000 rooms persists, the government announced an action plan. Starting in 2029, 60 to 65 million euros will be allocated annually for the construction of non-independent housing, such as student rooms. Additionally, provinces and municipalities will be tasked with ensuring that 60 percent of new developments consist of such units. To support housing corporations, the government is introducing measures to allow for greater interest deductions, potentially saving them hundreds of millions of euros.
