Netherlands government presses for PFAS site disclosure and fines Sabic plastic plant

State secretary Annet Bertram of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management told parliament that local authorities are responsible for publishing the locations of PFAS‑contaminated sites. She said no national map will be released yet, noting that 57 sites have been confirmed while thousands more are likely affected.

Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch water authority, has drafted a compulsory fine of up to €2.5 million against Sabic’s plastic plant in Bergen op Zoom for releasing PFBS‑containing rainwater into the Bergsche Diep. The penalty, set at €625 000 per month of excess PFBS, follows years of inadequate remedial action and previous enforcement measures. The ministry described the plant’s failure to reduce PFBS levels as “teleurstellend” (disappointing).
