Netherlands grid congestion prompts project prioritization

The Netherlands is facing increasing pressure on its electricity grid due to the energy transition, as companies electrify processes and invest in charging infrastructure and energy storage. This congestion has led to new regulations; as of July 1, 2026, small consumers in congestion areas may be placed on waiting lists for new or heavier connections.

In response to these challenges and new national rules from the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), the municipality of Olst-Wijhe has established a priority list for housing construction projects. This list allows the municipality to request priority for vital projects from grid operators to prevent long-term delays. While a high position on the list increases the chances of a faster connection, the municipality notes that the grid operator ultimately determines technical capacity and final realization.

Industry experts, such as Marco van Drimmelen of Batenburg, suggest that transformer stations themselves are rarely the primary cause of delays. Instead, bottlenecks often arise from unclear power demands, late engineering starts, or late-stage decision-making. To assist, Batenburg has developed an installer's guide for transformer stations to help manage engineering and planning more effectively.
