Netherlands hosts Week of Reading and Writing to support literacy

The Week of Reading and Writing, held from September 8 to 15, is raising awareness regarding difficulties with basic skills such as reading, writing, arithmetic, and digital literacy across various Dutch regions.

In Zevenaar, the organization Kunstwerk! is hosting an exhibition at the local library featuring personal stories and photographs from individuals facing language challenges. To provide a deeper understanding, virtual reality (VR) headsets are being used in several locations, including Zevenaar, Westervoort, Pannerden, and Duiven, to simulate the daily obstacles encountered by those with limited literacy.

In the Midden-Limburg region, where an estimated 43,700 residents struggle with these fundamental skills, various municipalities, libraries, and welfare organizations are collaborating. Activities include the distribution of information kits in towns such as Weert, Nederweert, Maasbracht, and Heythuysen. The Digi-Taalhuis, part of Bibliocenter, provides specific support for practicing the Dutch language and improving digital proficiency.
