Netherlands: Hundreds cycle at night to protest for women's safety
Hundreds of people participated in nighttime cycling protests across several Dutch cities to demand improved safety for women. The demonstrations took place in Amsterdam, Leeuwarden, Apeldoorn, Den Bosch, Middelburg, Zutphen, and Deventer.
Organized by the activist group Dolle Mina, the participants used bicycle bells and protest signs to draw attention to gender-based insecurity. The movement, known as 'Wij eisen de nacht op' (We demand the night), was established a year ago following the death of 17-year-old Lisa from Abcoude, who was killed while cycling home in Amsterdam.
While no injuries were reported during this latest round of protests, some minor incidents occurred, including confrontations with scooter riders in Leeuwarden and disturbances caused by fatbikers in Apeldoorn. Activists emphasized that despite the passage of a year, systemic issues regarding the safety of women, girls, and queer individuals remain unresolved.
