Netherlands ILT to reduce oversight due to budget cuts

The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) in the Netherlands will reduce the intensity of its oversight in several sectors due to budget cuts. The inspectorate expects a tightening budget, with a projected decrease of up to 14.6 million euros by 2031, driven by government austerity measures and the expiration of temporary funding.

As a result, the ILT will scale back supervision in areas such as the taxi industry, the transport of dangerous goods, and noise pollution related to aviation and rail. The agency will shift toward a more risk-based and data-driven approach, particularly regarding the transport of hazardous materials and the management of dikes and dams.

Priority will instead be given to issues such as PFAS pollution, cyber resilience, and the safety of products from Asian webshops. Inspector-General Mattheus Wassenaar warned that the agency can no longer provide the same level of oversight across all sectors, which may conflict with societal expectations.
