Netherlands implements fireworks ban and amnesty programs

Following a nationwide ban on most fireworks in the Netherlands effective August 1, several municipalities are implementing different approaches to local enforcement and safety. The mayors of De Wolden, Meppel, and Hoogeveen have decided to allow exemptions for local associations or foundations that meet specific legal requirements, such as submitting a safety plan and being registered with the Chamber of Commerce.

In De Wolden, an additional restriction has been applied due to limited enforcement capacity, limiting the exemption to just one organization per village. Conversely, the municipality of Staphorst has opted not to grant any exemptions, citing insufficient time to manage the process properly.

To manage existing stockpiles, a national amnesty program is underway. In areas like Winschoten, residents can surrender prohibited fireworks at mobile collection points for free and anonymously. This initiative, supported by the national government, allows citizens to hand in even previously illegal fireworks without fear of fines or legal consequences, aiming to remove hazardous materials from residential areas before stricter enforcement begins.
