Netherlands implements greenery initiatives to combat heat stress

Municipalities and regional authorities in the Netherlands are implementing various initiatives to combat heat stress and improve climate resilience through increased greenery and water management.

In Zandvoort, residents can apply for subsidies of up to €35 per square meter to install green roofs. These installations aim to reduce heat, manage rainwater, improve air quality, and support biodiversity. The initiative, supported by the Rooftop Revolution foundation, encourages community participation to make the village cooler and more sustainable.

In the Achterhoek region, the Province of Gelderland is providing subsidies to municipalities for urban redesign projects. Notable actions include the planting of 140 trees and the installation of a smart water system in Dinxperlo, and the addition of 300 square meters of greenery and a cooling water element in Lochem. Other projects, such as the restoration of the Old Harbor in Borculo and cooling measures for a senior complex in Oude IJsselstreek, emphasize the importance of community involvement and integrated environmental design to mitigate rising summer temperatures.
