Netherlands implements river biobarriers for erosion control

The Netherlands is implementing river biobarriers, a method that combines hydraulic engineering with natural processes to protect riverbanks. These nature-based solutions utilize materials such as wood structures, willow branch bundles (known as fascines), and riparian vegetation to stabilize shores.

Unlike traditional rigid infrastructure like dikes, dams, and locks, these biobarriers are designed to reduce wave energy, encourage sediment accumulation, and mitigate erosion. Because the Dutch landscape is heavily influenced by rivers, canals, and low-lying areas, these flexible, site-specific designs offer a complementary approach to long-standing flood protection strategies.
