Netherlands increases medical student training capacity

The Dutch government has announced an increase in medical student training spots for the upcoming academic year. Starting next year, there will be room for 66 additional medical students, reversing a previous reduction. By 2027, the total number of spots is expected to reach 3,050, up from the current 2,984. This figure falls short of the 3,330 spots recommended by the Capaciteitsorgaan, which based its advice on both specialist training needs and the growing demand for general practitioners.

Minister of Education, Culture and Science Rianne Letschert noted that while the government recognizes the importance of sufficient general practitioners, it is only partially adopting the Capaciteitsorgaan's advice due to uncertainties in the new vision.

Other adjustments include: - An increase of 28 oral hygiene training spots starting in the 2027/2028 academic year, bringing the total to 381. - Growth in training spots for nurse practitioners and physician assistants. - An increase in training spots for healthcare psychologists, as previously announced by Health Minister Mirjam Sterk.

However, the government declined to increase dentist training spots despite recommendations, citing high costs.
