Netherlands introduces new animal welfare vision and veterinary funding

The Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN) has introduced new initiatives focused on animal welfare and the strengthening of the veterinary sector. A new vision regarding animals outside of livestock farming has been submitted to the House of Representatives, emphasizing responsible breeding and the reduction of harmful physical traits in dogs and cats.

Research by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has identified 26 potentially harmful physical characteristics in dogs, with nine prioritized due to their impact on welfare. These include brachycephalic skull shapes (short snouts), abnormal eyelid positions, and extremely small body sizes.

Additionally, the LVVN budget for 2027 and 2028 includes €2 million dedicated to strengthening the veterinary profession and ensuring quality through professional standards and market monitoring. The budget also allocates €7.5 million for animal health, including disease surveillance, €500,000 for addressing antibiotic resistance, and €600,000 for avian influenza preparedness.
