Netherlands introduces new educational goals to improve literacy

New educational core goals for language and mathematics have been implemented in the Netherlands to address declining literacy and numeracy levels among children. These updated standards replace the previous 2006 guidelines, which experts described as too vague.

The new objectives aim to link language proficiency more closely to general world knowledge, helping students better comprehend texts rather than relying solely on reading strategies. While the government sets these legal targets, individual schools maintain the autonomy to decide how to implement them in their classrooms.

Some institutions, such as the Alan Turing School in Amsterdam, report having successfully utilized similar principles for over a decade. The school's director, Eva Naaijkens, noted that prioritizing reading is essential for literary competence and long-term learning, dedicating up to 60 percent of instructional time to the subject.
