Netherlands launches anonymous fireworks return scheme

The Dutch government has launched a nationwide fireworks return campaign to support a new ban on consumer fireworks. From September 1 to October 9, residents can anonymously hand in any fireworks they still possess, including previously banned items like rockets and cobras, without facing fines.

Drop-off points will be available across various municipalities, with locations selected to ensure they are reachable within a maximum of 40 minutes. For example, the municipality of Leiden has designated a site at the parking lot next to Combibad and IJshal De Vliet for residents in the region to dispose of their items safely.

The ban aims to increase safety during New Year’s Eve by reducing injuries, property damage, nuisance, and violence against emergency services. Once collected, certified personnel will safely package and destroy the fireworks. While most consumer fireworks are prohibited, municipalities may grant permits to organized groups such as neighborhood associations.
