Netherlands launches campaign following study on coercive control

A new study commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security reveals that approximately 1.5 million people in the Netherlands believe someone they know is in an unsafe or unhealthy relationship. The research highlights the prevalence of coercive control, where a partner exerts structural pressure or control over another through methods such as monitoring contact with friends and family, humiliation, or threats.

In response to these findings, Minister of Justice and Security David van Weel, alongside survivors of femicide, has launched a campaign to encourage bystanders to act on their suspicions. The initiative aims to combat the pattern of coercive control, which often precedes fatal violence. The Minister noted that the government has previously published a legislative proposal to criminalize psychological abuse and coercive control.

To support those concerned, the organization Veilig Thuis offers free and anonymous advice. The campaign advises individuals to maintain contact, ask open questions, and listen without judgment to help break the cycle of abuse.
