Netherlands launches offshore green hydrogen feasibility study

Hydrogen of Dutch Origin (H2DO) and its partners have begun a government‑funded feasibility and concept study for a 30–50 MW offshore green hydrogen installation in the Dutch North Sea. The project, supported by the Topsector Energie programme, aims to produce a FEED‑ready design that could lead to a demonstrator operating by 2031. By converting surplus offshore wind power into hydrogen at sea, the study seeks to alleviate on‑shore grid congestion, reduce land and freshwater use, and bolster energy security by supplying domestically produced green hydrogen.

The consortium includes H2SEA, Haskoning, TCI Risk Management, ECHT Regie in Transitie and Smulders HSM, with additional backing from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency and GroenvermogenNL. It aligns with the EU’s Hamburg Declaration on scaling offshore hydrogen and will assess technical, commercial, regulatory and permitting pathways, as well as pipeline transport to shore and long‑term offtake models.
