Netherlands: Protests against asylum centers spark unrest

Protests against the establishment of asylum seeker centers (AZC) have led to unrest in several Dutch municipalities. In the Neder-Betuwe municipality, tensions escalated in Kesteren and Opheusden. Following previous riots in Opheusden that resulted in 14 arrests and the declaration of a security risk area, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Kesteren. The situation in Kesteren involved the use of heavy fireworks and smoke bombs, prompting police intervention by the Mobile Unit and seven arrests for fireworks possession and resisting arrest.

In Terneuzen, dozens of residents protested at the town hall against a proposal to house up to 200 asylum seekers in a former Neckermann building. Organizers expressed concerns regarding local capacity and requested alternative locations for families with children.

In Elst, a women's march was organized to voice concerns regarding safety and livability in light of a potential large-scale asylum center. Organizers emphasized the desire for a peaceful demonstration focused on security questions for women and families.
