Netherlands: Local tension rises over asylum housing management

Local authorities and residents in the Netherlands are expressing significant frustration regarding the management of asylum seeker emergency housing by the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA).

In Bloemendaal, residents of De Zilk have criticized the municipal government, accusing it of using emergency housing at De Tiltenberg to bypass stricter quality requirements for regular reception centers. Residents also alleged ‘pseudo-participation,’ claiming that community engagement was insufficient and that unannounced visits prevented many from participating in discussions. While the COA aims to have the location ready by early 2027 for up to 120 people, locals argue the municipality has not been transparent about the necessary steps before the site becomes operational.

Similarly, in the municipality of Het Hogeland, local politicians have reacted with indignation following the decision to extend emergency housing in Uithuizen by one year. Officials expressed that the unilateral extension by the national government and the COA has damaged trust, with some leaders suggesting that the COA is ‘exploiting our good will.’ Despite a decrease in new asylum applications, the total number of people in reception centers continues to grow due to slow procedures and housing shortages.
