Netherlands Minister criticizes closure of disability care villas
Dutch Care Minister Mirjam Sterk has criticized the decision by Villa ExpertCare and its owner, B. Braun, to cease operations at several care villas. The shutdown, scheduled for December 31, affects 25 children with multiple disabilities.
Minister Sterk described the decision as ‘stuitend’ (appalling), noting that the companies are stopping care despite prior agreements. While the companies claim the quality of care can no longer be guaranteed and have offered to mediate finding new placements, Sterk argued that such mediation is a basic responsibility rather than a gesture of goodwill.
The Minister noted she lacks the legal instruments to compel private entities to continue care, but emphasized that the decision is unacceptable as long as suitable alternative placements have not been secured for all children. The Dutch House of Representatives has previously characterized the actions of B. Braun and Villa ExpertCare as prioritizing financial interests over the welfare of children.
