Netherlands moves 120 asylum seekers to night shelters as Ter Apel overflow fuels tensions

Following the launch of a new EU asylum system, the registration centre in Ter Apel, Netherlands, became overcrowded after a Eurodac database failure prevented processing of applications. On Sunday, 120 asylum seekers were transferred to temporary night shelters: 92 slept in a sports hall in De Wijk, 28 in the Hanzeplaza congress centre in Groningen, while 13 were placed in a hotel in Zwolle. The overcrowding has forced nightly relocations to nearby facilities, with plans to use a sports hall in Westerbork for a week starting Monday.

On Monday evening, a clash erupted outside the Ter Apel centre involving several asylum seekers. Police and security personnel intervened, ordering at least two individuals to lie on the ground; one was escorted away by guards. NGOs such as VluchtelingenWerk Nederland warned of rising tensions at the centre's entrance, noting a recent incident involving a knife. Police and the Royal Marechaussee deployed multiple vehicles to manage the situation. The unrest highlights growing strain on the Dutch asylum reception system as it adapts to the new European framework.
