Netherlands nitrogen plan meets farmer doubts and opposition pressure

Young Dutch farmers, represented by the Nederlands Agrarisch Jongeren Kontakt (NAJK), say they cannot yet support the cabinet’s upcoming nitrogen package. NAJK chair Gerben Boom stresses that key details such as the GV1 livestock density norm and the legal status of PAS‑melders are still unclear, and he urges that any measures be linked to water quality rather than nitrogen alone. He continues to meet weekly with agriculture minister Jaimi van Essen but stresses the need for legal certainty for farmers.

At the same time, centre‑right opposition parties (CU and JA21) have filed a motion to raise the lower deposit threshold in the Aerius nitrogen model, which currently sits at 0.005 mol N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹. Lawmakers argue that the ultra‑low limit blocks building permits and hampers agricultural and housing development, and that a higher threshold is scientifically justified. The minority cabinet will need broader parliamentary backing to pass the final nitrogen package.
