Netherlands' North receives €50M boost for railway and road upgrades

Regional parties in the northern Netherlands are urging greater public investment in transport infrastructure. The Groninger Belang party argues that critical highways such as the A7, A28 and N33 have been deferred, compromising defence logistics, energy supply routes and the strategic Eemshaven hub. It calls for immediate road, bridge and rail maintenance as a matter of national interest.

The province of Drenthe has pledged €50 million toward the Nedersaksenlijn, a partly new railway linking Enschede, Hardenberg and Groningen. The funding is intended to demonstrate regional commitment and to push the national government to proceed with the €2 billion project. The line would shorten travel times, improve access to the University of Twente and enhance connectivity for the north, with an earliest completion date projected for 2035 if approved.
