Netherlands' NS Dal Vrij Pass Attracts 175,000 Riders in First Two Weeks

The Dutch rail operator NS reported that 175,000 passengers signed up for the temporary Dal Vrij subscription within two weeks of its launch on 15 June. The €49‑per‑month pass offers unlimited travel during off‑peak hours on weekdays and all day on weekends, making it especially attractive for recreational trips and flexible commuters. In the first fortnight, subscribers logged more than 9 million kilometres, averaging just over 50 km per rider.

High demand overloaded NS’s website on the opening day, prompting temporary access issues that were quickly resolved. The promotion runs until 31 July, after which the price will rise to the regular €127.90 monthly rate. The subscription is valid across all Dutch train operators and includes a free Kids Vrij option for children up to 11 years. The Dutch government is co‑financing the scheme with a €118 million budget, aiming to shift travel from car to train and better distribute rail capacity throughout the day.
