Netherlands NS off‑peak train pass attracts 270,000 users

The Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) introduced the Nederland Dal Vrij off‑peak train pass on 15 June. In its first month, about 270,000 passengers purchased the €49‑per‑month subscription, allowing unlimited travel outside the morning and evening rush hours and all day on weekends and holidays. More than 80,000 of these new subscribers had never held an NS season ticket before, indicating the scheme is drawing occasional travelers onto the rail network. The biggest group of buyers were 25‑ to 29‑year‑olds, roughly 50,000 in number. The temporary measure is part of a government initiative to offset high energy and fuel costs, backed by €118 million in state funding. The promotional price remains available until 31 July; thereafter the pass will renew automatically at the regular €127.95 monthly rate unless cancelled.
