Netherlands pension updates: AOW cuts scrapped and compensation petition launched

Leaked government plans for 2027 suggest that a proposed €2.8 billion cut to AOW pension benefits will not proceed. However, other fiscal measures may impact the purchasing power of retirees, including potential increases in the mandatory deductible and higher taxes for higher income brackets.

Separately, Omroep MAX is supporting a petition calling for fairer compensation during the transition to the new Dutch pension system. Currently, workers aged 40 and older risk significant pension gaps due to a flaw in how compensation is distributed. Because pension funds are transitioning at different times, employees who change jobs during this period may fail to receive compensation from either their old or new funds. The petition, initiated by Tycho Verheul, urges the government to implement a solution to prevent tens of thousands of workers from losing out on these funds.
