Netherlands police log record half‑year of fake‑officer reports
In the first half of 2026 Dutch police received more than 7,200 reports of individuals posing as police officers, the highest number ever recorded for a six‑month period. The surge follows a sharp increase since 2024, after only a few hundred reports in previous years. Over 600 suspects have been arrested in connection with these impersonations, which often involve fraudsters presenting themselves as neighborhood police to steal money, jewelry or bank cards.
To curb the trend, police have launched preventative campaigns shown on television screens in hundreds of general‑practice waiting rooms, warning the public not to trust anyone claiming to be an officer without verification. The effort builds on earlier campaigns such as “Don’t let them in, whatever they invent.”
