EU suspends €18m aid to Sierra Leone over extradition dispute
The European Commission has suspended €18 million in financial aid to Sierra Leone, a move Dutch Justice Minister David van Weel describes as a measure to pressure the country into extraditing Jos Leijdekkers. Leijdekkers, a convicted drug trafficker known as ‘Bolle Jos’, was sentenced in absentia to 24 years in the Netherlands for cocaine trafficking and murder. Reports suggest Leijdekkers has been living in Sierra Leone under high-level protection.
Van Weel indicated that an additional €22.5 million earmarked for 2027 could also be withheld if Sierra Leone continues to refuse cooperation. While the Dutch government views this as a necessary step to combat organized crime, development organizations like Cordaid have expressed concern that the suspension will disproportionately impact local populations relying on aid for health and food security.
The Sierra Leonean government has rejected the link between the funding delay and the extradition dispute. Officials state the postponement of the 2026 budget support is due to technical and procedural issues regarding a financing agreement amendment. European Commissioner Magnus Brunner also noted that the decision regarding the 2026 disbursement was based on administrative reasons, though he acknowledged EU concerns regarding transnational organized crime.
