Netherlands proposes school-wide smartphone ban by 2027

The Dutch government has proposed a comprehensive strategy to protect children online, which includes a recommendation to ban smartphones in primary and secondary schools throughout the entire school day starting January 1, 2027. Under this proposal, mobile devices would be prohibited not only in classrooms but also during breaks, in school halls, and on playgrounds. The goal is to improve student concentration and reduce exposure to online risks such as addictive algorithms and harmful content.

This initiative is part of a broader ‘Strategy Letter on Children’s Rights’ presented by officials including State Secretary Willemijn Aerdts. Beyond school bans, the government is advocating for a European minimum age of 15 for social media and stricter regulations for digital services.

Reactions from the education sector are mixed. The Algemene Onderwijsbond (AOB) supports the move, noting improved focus in schools that have already implemented similar rules. Conversely, the VO-raad argues that the advice is excessive, stating that many schools already successfully manage smartphone use and that individual school boards should retain the authority to set their own policies.
