Netherlands proposes public broadcasting reform merging NOS and NTR
Dutch Media Minister Rianne Letschert has presented a legislative proposal to reform the national public broadcasting system. Under the plan, the NOS and NTR will merge into a single organization operating under the NOS brand. The NOS welcomed the proposal, stating that maintaining the brand is a logical choice in a fragmented media landscape and that the merger will create a strong organization for news, sports, events, education, and background information.
However, the NTR noted that the proposal lacks explicit recognition of culture as a public task, though it acknowledged the strength of the proposed foundation.
The Commissariaat voor de Media expressed concerns regarding the bill. While supporting the need for reform, the regulator warned that the proposal lacks concrete measures to ensure public broadcasting remains visible against dominant online platforms. Additionally, the regulator criticized the emphasis on self-regulation, arguing that more independent oversight and clear rules are necessary to protect public interests and ensure accountability for the use of public funds.
