Netherlands: Public concern rises over extreme weather effects

A survey conducted by ANP and Kieskompas reveals that 63% of Dutch citizens are concerned about the effects of extreme weather in their local areas. This includes fears regarding heavy rainfall, heatwaves, and prolonged periods of drought.

Concerns are notably higher in the province of Limburg, where 75% of residents expressed worry, up from 68% five years ago. Experts attribute this increase to the visible and immediate impact of the severe 2021 floods. Hans de Moel from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam noted that while floods cause immediate alarm, drought is a more complex issue because water cannot be easily replenished.

Recent environmental records in the region include record-high North Sea temperatures, historically low water levels in the Rhine, and a record number of days with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius.
