Netherlands regional transport strike disrupts bus and train services
Thousands of regional transport workers in the Netherlands have launched a 24-hour strike, causing widespread disruptions to bus and train services. The industrial action, organized by the unions FNV and CNV, stems from stalled negotiations regarding a new collective labor agreement (CAO).
Union demands include a 9.5 percent wage increase over two years, improved working conditions for older employees, and protections against increased driving hours. Employers, including major operators such as Arriva, EBS, and Qbuzz, have argued that the union's financial demands are not feasible and that public transport must remain affordable.
The strike has led to significant service reductions across various provinces, including Brabant, Gelderland, Overijssel, and the Lekstroom region. While some services continue due to non-striking staff or different labor agreements, many commuters face canceled routes and increased wait times. The unions have announced that this is the first in a series of weekly strikes that may continue until Christmas if an agreement is not reached.
