Netherlands pushes 1x35 A upgrades to ease household grid bottlenecks

Research commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate found that a 1 × 35 A connection is sufficient for most Dutch homes equipped with an all‑electric heat pump and an electric vehicle charger. The study says the main obstacles to wider adoption are poor insulation and improperly tuned heat pumps, not the need for three‑phase connections, and that a load‑balancer can manage both heating and charging on a single 1 × 35 A line.

Meanwhile, grid operator Liander reports growing congestion in Amsterdam and other regions after new priority rules from the Authority for Consumers and Markets placed households and small businesses at the end of the waiting list. Applicants may wait one to three years for extra capacity. Liander plans to build 2,600 new transformer housings, add 20 new electricity stations and lay over 2,200 km of cable, affecting more than a third of the city’s streets, as part of a broader effort to keep pace with rising electricity demand.
