Netherlands raises nature fire risk to phase 2 in Groningen and Brabant

On 25 June 2026 Dutch authorities elevated the nature fire risk to phase 2 in the provinces of Groningen and Brabant because of prolonged drought and extreme heat. Phase 2 signals a higher likelihood of fast‑spreading, unpredictable fires, prompting fire services and safety regions to be on heightened alert.

The fire brigades warned the public to avoid smoking, barbecuing or lighting fires in natural areas, not to park vehicles in tall grass, and to keep forest paths clear for emergency crews. Residents are urged to stay alert, follow local fire‑risk advisories, and call 112 immediately if they see smoke or flames.

The KNMI had also issued a red code heat alert, with temperatures expected to reach up to 40 °C, further increasing fire danger. Guidance on preventing fires and actions to take during an incident was published on the nature‑fire‑risk.nl website and through local alerts.
