Netherlands ranks Dodewaard as top site for a small modular reactor

A provincial study by Gelderland identified Dodewaard in the municipality of Neder‑Betuwe as the most promising location for a Small Modular Reactor (SMR). The report highlighted the existing 380/150 kV high‑voltage grid node, available cooling water, and the site’s history with nuclear facilities as key factors. Local officials plan further technical and spatial feasibility work, as well as consultations with residents and businesses to assess social impacts and potential benefits such as high‑skill jobs, innovation and education opportunities.

At the national level, the Dutch government has narrowed the selection for large‑scale nuclear plants to two locations – Terneuzen in Zeeland and the Eemshaven area in Groningen – after discarding other sites. Minister Stientje van Veldhoven emphasized the need for strong political and community support, noting that Groningen currently lacks such backing. The debate underscores the broader policy discussion on expanding nuclear energy in the Netherlands while balancing regional concerns.
