Netherlands reduces closed youth care capacity
The capacity for closed youth care in the Netherlands continues to decline as part of a strategic plan to reach near-zero closed placements by 2030. According to the latest monitor from the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa), there were 467 places available as of July 1, 2026, representing a 12% decrease compared to the previous year.
The number of youths placed in these facilities also dropped by 23% to 330 individuals. There is a visible trend toward smaller-scale care, with an increasing number of accommodations hosting groups of six or fewer youths.
While the reduction aligns with policy goals, concerns have been raised regarding the availability of suitable alternative care for vulnerable youth. Experts are calling for better national oversight to ensure that appropriate initiatives are developed to support children with complex problems who can no longer be placed in closed care.
