Netherlands to give children free public transport from 2027, end senior discount

From 1 January 2027 children aged 4 to 11 will be able to travel free on buses, trams and metros throughout the Netherlands when accompanied by an adult. The measure, announced by DOVA – the cooperation of provinces and regional transport authorities – is intended to create a single, clear scheme and to encourage families to use public transport more often.

At the same time the nationwide age‑based discount for passengers aged 65 and over on the same modes will be abolished on that date. Although the national concession disappears, some provinces and transport regions may keep their own senior‑fare schemes, meaning prices could vary locally.

The change has prompted strong reactions from seniors and advocacy groups. The Senior Coalition and the political party 50PLUS have voiced disappointment, and a petition to retain the senior discount has gathered more than 13,000 signatures. "We find that older people should not become the victims of new policy," said Bep van de Wiel of 50PLUS Eindhoven.
