Netherlands restructures diplomatic network, reversing South Sudan embassy closure

The Netherlands is undergoing a major restructuring of its global diplomatic network, involving both the preservation and closure of several missions. Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen announced that the government has allocated €35m to strengthen its network of embassies and consulates, partially reversing a previous €70m structural budget cut.

As part of this review, the Dutch government has reversed its decision to close the embassy in Juba, South Sudan, citing the country’s severe humanitarian situation and ongoing security challenges. However, the government confirmed it will proceed with closing embassies in Libya, Burundi, Myanmar, and Zimbabwe, as well as its consulate-general in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Interests in these locations will be managed by missions in neighboring states.

The Dutch embassy in Harare noted that while the closure is significant for partners in Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi, it does not diminish the country’s commitment to regional relationships. Additionally, the Netherlands plans to strengthen its presence in Damascus and is considering opening new embassies in Montenegro and Namibia.
