Netherlands rolls out package lockers to aid seniors' home deliveries

Package lockers are being installed in senior housing complexes across the Netherlands to address delivery challenges faced by older residents. The lockers, supplied by De Buren, allow couriers to deposit parcels in a single on‑site unit, giving seniors 24‑hour access and eliminating the need for family members or home‑care staff to transport packages to distant collection points. This solution supports the national policy of encouraging longer independent living for the elderly, a demographic where mobility limitations and loneliness are growing concerns.

At the same time, a new dossier series titled “De Verrekijker” examines broader pressures on the Dutch social domain, featuring experts such as Ruth Peetoom and Roxana Asmus. The series highlights issues like bureaucratic overload, the vital role of informal volunteers from organisations like Humanitas, and the need for coordinated support among municipalities, care providers, and neighbourhood teams to meet the rising demand for senior care and social cohesion.
