Netherlands seeks to resolve nitrogen crisis through new permit regulations

The Dutch government is working to address a long-standing nitrogen crisis that has impacted sectors including agriculture, construction, and transport. Agriculture Minister Jaimi van Essen stated that proposed government measures, supported by an opinion from state advocate Pels Rijcken, could provide a “perspective on issuing permits.”

The crisis stems from a 2019 court ruling that mandated stricter emission limits to protect the environment. By implementing new regulations, the government aims to balance ecological protection with the economic necessity of allowing new investments and development through the issuance of permits.
