Netherlands sees deadly cyclist crashes in Helmond and Terhole

In Helmond, a cyclist was seriously injured on the Wolfsputterbaan crossing Sunday morning after a car struck her. Local cyclists said the site has long been considered dangerous, citing heavy traffic and high vehicle speeds. The provincial government plans to improve safety, but major changes such as a bridge or tunnel are not expected before 2029.

A separate tragedy occurred on the N290 near Terhole when a 19‑year‑old driver hit a group of schoolchildren from De Warande elementary school who were on a bike ride. Three pupils and the school director were killed, three other children were hospitalized, and the driver was taken into custody. Hundreds of residents gathered for a silent march in Axel, many dressed in white, to mourn the victims and support the families.
