Netherlands sees major municipal building renovations in Veendam and Rotterdam

The historic Veendam municipal building is being extensively refurbished. Work includes sustainable upgrades, adding an extra floor and a rear extension, with the project slated for completion by the end of 2027. Contractor Van Wijnen of Groningen leads the renovation, coordinating with mayor Annelies Pleyte and municipal staff who will continue working in the building during construction.

In Rotterdam, the IKC Albert Plesman school adopted a “vision‑expanding” design process that explored alternatives to demolition. Two design teams examined the existing structure’s high ceilings, central space and wide corridors, proposing solutions that preserve valuable elements while improving indoor‑outdoor connectivity and future‑proofing the facility. The proposals are being evaluated for usability, urban integration and long‑term resilience before moving to the next design phase.
