Netherlands sees migrant‑rights protest and detention‑center criticism

A church service in Hattem organised by NGK De Open Poort on 14 June turned into a protest for migrant rights, emphasizing the biblical call to welcome refugees. The event was followed by an information meeting with Takecarebnb, a programme that places asylum seekers in Dutch host families for three‑month stays, and plans were announced for a similar meeting in Zwolle.

Separately, the Council of Europe’s anti‑torture committee (CPT) released a report condemning the care provided to migrants detained in Dutch facilities, including the Rotterdam centre and the Penitentiary Institution Ter Apel. It highlighted understaffing, inadequate mental‑health and addiction support, and a high level of inmate violence. The CPT called for faster complaint procedures and for better staffing, especially psychologists, to improve conditions for detainees.
