Netherlands to charge companies €400 a month for leasing gasoline and diesel cars

From 1 January 2027 the Dutch government will apply a monthly levy of 1 percent of the official vehicle price to employers that lease internal‑combustion‑engine or hybrid company cars. The charge cannot be passed on to employees. For example, a lease on a €40 000 car would cost the employer an additional €400 each month.

The measure will also become retroactive in 2030, affecting contracts signed before the 2027 start date. It is part of the Netherlands’ broader strategy to accelerate the transition to fully electric vehicle fleets. Industry groups have warned that the fee could strain small and medium‑sized enterprises and that the existing electricity grid may struggle to support a rapid rollout of charging infrastructure.
