Netherlands to drop senior transit discount as children travel for free

From 1 January 2027 the Netherlands will abolish the nationwide 34 percent discount for passengers aged 65 and over on buses, trams and metros. The change is part of a new fare scheme that gives children up to 11 years free travel when they accompany a paying adult, with a maximum of three children per adult, extending the existing Kids Vrij product.

The decision has triggered public opposition. A nationwide petition against the senior discount has gathered more than 22 000 signatures, while another petition calling for a uniform senior fare arrangement has been signed over 18 500 times. Critics warn that low‑income seniors could face higher travel costs and reduced mobility.

The Vervoerregio Amsterdam, which includes Amsterdam, Oostzaan, Wormerland and Zaanstad, will implement the new nationwide rules. It is also exploring a regional senior subscription for financially vulnerable older adults, although it cannot use income data to target the scheme.
