Netherlands to end senior rail discount and raise Dal Vrij fares

From 1 January 2027 the nationwide senior discount for public‑transport travel in the Netherlands will be discontinued, while children under 12 will travel for free. Elder‑advocacy groups warn the loss will reduce autonomy for older passengers. Dick van der Horst, board member of KBO Stad, said, “I no longer bike because everything is more fragile, and public transport lets me get out.” Titus Stam of PRO Utrecht called the move a cost‑cutting measure that harms seniors.

Consumer organization Rover has warned that the temporary “Nederland Dal Vrij” subscription, introduced at €49 per month with state funding, will automatically be renewed after 31 August at €127.95 per month. Rover director Daan Zieren criticised Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) for “unequal treatment” of customers and urged the operator to inform users directly about the price jump. About 250 000 passengers are affected.
